My Ántonia tells the stories of several immigrant families who move out to rural Nebraska to start new lives in America, with a particular focus on a Bohemian family, the Shimerdas, whose eldest daughter is named Ántonia. Nevertheless, Darcy doesn't let his hostility disrupt her investigation or her burgeoning attraction to him. From the moment he lays eyes on psychic Darcy Tremayne, a former make-up model turned paranormal investigator, he treats her like dirt indeed, Matt's redeeming qualities are few. But after several people flee his historic mansion, claiming to have seen a menacing spirit, Matt calls in Harrison Investigations. Sheriff Matt Stone doesn't believe in ghosts and scorns anyone who does. A gorgeous psychic and a skeptical small-town sheriff overcome their initial dislike and fall in love in this uninspired offering from veteran romance writer Graham (aka Shannon Drake). 6/9/2023 0 Comments One Summer by Bill BrysonCalvin Coolidge interrupted an already leisurely presidency for an even more relaxing three-month vacation in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The American South was clobbered by unprecedented rain and by flooding of the Mississippi basin, a great human disaster, the relief efforts for which were guided by the uncannily able and insufferably pompous Herbert Hoover. Alvin “Shipwreck” Kelly sat atop a flagpole in Newark, New Jersey, for twelve days-a new record. In between those dates a Queens housewife named Ruth Snyder and her corset-salesman lover garroted her husband, leading to a murder trial that became a huge tabloid sensation. Meanwhile, the titanically talented Babe Ruth was beginning his assault on the home run record, which would culminate on September 30 with his sixtieth blast, one of the most resonant and durable records in sports history. The summer of 1927 began with one of the signature events of the twentieth century: on May 21, 1927, Charles Lindbergh became the first man to cross the Atlantic by plane nonstop, and when he landed in Le Bourget airfield near Paris, he ignited an explosion of worldwide rapture and instantly became the most famous person on the planet. In One Summer Bill Bryson, one of our greatest and most beloved nonfiction writers, transports readers on a journey back to one amazing season in American life. “Hennessey explores Shane’s life and it’s many complications with sensitivity. Shane is positioned just right to surface problems negotiating friends and romance as an ordinary boy.” - Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books More importantly, his story walks readers through what it feels like to know your body doesn’t align with your gender. “Shane’s story presents a range of experiences of how people react to someone transgender. “Shane’s voice rings true, and the writing is straightforward and accessible.t’s refreshing to read a story with a young trans character already living life as his true gender and never questioning his identity. The book.has wide appeal.” - School Library Journal An honest, encouraging addition to the growing ranks of transgender lit for the middle grades.” - Booklist “Hennessey sensitively portrays typical sixth-grade trials (first crushes, embarrassing parents, etc.), compounded by the confusion and prejudice that can accompany transitioning. A warm, realistic book.” - Publishers Weekly “Debut author Hennessey effectively depicts Shane’s life as both ordinary and very particular. It’s challenging but not tragic, and it ends with bright, beautiful hope.” - Kirkus Reviews “This is the story with a triumphant-but-realistic ending. 6/8/2023 0 Comments Sam and dave dig a holeSam and Dave have entered a giant reality show. The sky isn’t the sky – it’s a giant dome with lighting orchestrated by Ed Harris. Basically, if you’ve seen the movie The Truman Show, it’s exactly like that. The boys fall into an underground world built to resemble their own. Theory #2: The Truman Show-esque Civilization Theory Oh, and what’s that on the first page of the book? An apple tree? *cue crazy guy voice* GARDEN OF EDEN ANYONE?! Thus when the dog/Jesus digs down at the end of the book, the boys land in purgatory. In this theory, the dog that accompanies Sam and Dave is Jesus, trying to lead the boys in the right direction (notice that the dog is always pointing the way to reach the jewels), yet they don’t listen and end up missing the precious stones every time. I will now present six theories on what exactly happens at the end of Sam and Dave Dig a Hole, from least likely to most likely. Really, one of the best open-ended picture book conclusions in recent memory. It has some excellent broad humor, as well as one heck of a challenging ending that will make readers think.
